Four new faces in the UN Security Council
Four new countries have been elected as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council. These countries are India, Mexico, Norway and Ireland.
The four countries will serve as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council in 2021 and 2022. However, the western country of Canada has again failed to get elected as a temporary member of the council. Djibouti and Kenya, meanwhile, have a two-thirds majority in Africa, and new elections will be held today (Thursday).
Not only Canada but also Ireland and Norway have won as representatives of the western countries. But for a long time, Canada has been campaigning for the election of a temporary member of the Security Council. The defeat is being hailed as a disaster for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
From the Asia-Pacific region, India has won unopposed. India received votes from 184 out of 192 countries in the UN. From now on, India and China will have to sit together in the Security Council. At the moment there is a serious military tension between the two countries; Even 20 Indian soldiers have been killed in Chinese attacks. Mexico received 187 votes in the election. Djibouti and Kenya have competed despite being selected as a country from the African region.
Kenya has the support of the African Union but is desperate to become a member of the Djibouti Security Council. Kenya received 113 votes and Djibouti 74 votes.
