Will the news of the purchase of bombers from Russia increase Indian-China tensions?
A Russian daily has reported that the Indian government is trying to buy MiG-29 and Sukhoi-39 fighter jets from Moscow, with New Delhi launching the effort amid border tensions with China.
Citing multiple Russian military sources, the daily said that India wants to acquire Russian weapons as soon as possible in order to counter the threats posed by Beijing and Islamabad.
New Delhi also wants the implementation of India's earlier agreement to buy a state-of-the-art S-400 missile defense system from Russia to be expedited. India also paid 500 million to Russia last year under the agreement.
However, Dmitry Shugayev, head of Russia's Federal Agency for Military and Technical Cooperation, said last year that India would receive the first shipment of the S-400 in 2021. But the Russian daily writes that India now wants to get the S-400 by the end of this year.
