This time Zarif's visit to Turkey, but why?
Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has arrived in Turkey with a delegation. A statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry yesterday indicated that various regional and international issues, including bilateral relations and trade development, would be discussed.
After Turkey, the Iranian foreign minister is scheduled to visit Russia. During the visit, he will also discuss with the Russian Foreign Minister the latest developments in the region, as well as the development of Moscow-Tehran relations. Bilateral relations between Tehran and Ankara have entered a new phase in recent years. The Astana-Sochi meeting on resolving the Syrian crisis has opened a new chapter in Iran-Turkey relations through multilateral diplomacy, the establishment of a ceasefire and joint measures to create a de-escalation zone in Syria, and cooperation in the fight against terrorism.
In various fields, this bilateral cooperation has had a significant impact on strengthening regional security. Ankara has been pursuing a "zero problem" policy with regional countries for the past few years, said Vali Golmohmadi, an expert on Turkey. Following that policy has improved Turkey's overall situation with its West Asian neighbors. Zarif's visit to Turkey confirmed the truth of this view. In this regard, bilateral relations between Iran and Turkey will be strengthened. Iran has always insisted on defending Syria's sovereignty and establishing stability in that country. Zarif's visit to Turkey and Moscow can be considered from the point of view of reviewing the status of the agreements reached at the tripartite meeting.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed the need to establish stability and security in the region, including Syria, at the fifth Iran-Russia-Turkey trilateral summit last year. All sides agreed to share a common vision in the fight against terrorism. Experts believe that reviewing those decisions could also be the goal of Zarif's visit.
