From August 25, Myanmar's army and the extremist Buddhists in the country carried out brutal attacks on Rohingya Muslims. At least 6000 Rohingya Muslims were killed and more than 8,000 were injured in the attack. More than a million Rohingya Muslims lost their homes and became refugees.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for Rohingya refugees to return to their homeland while maintaining human dignity. He also said that the socio-economic conditions of the people should also be improved.
Guterres said in a speech in New York on Saturday that Rohingya Muslims have now become one of the most fragile populations in the world. He urged the Myanmar government to give the Rohingya an opportunity to return to their homeland by maintaining honor, dignity and security.
The UN Secretary General made the call when Bangladesh reacted sharply to Myanmar's lies about Rohingya refugees returning home. Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has also challenged the Myanmar government to show evidence of a Rohingya refugee returning home.
"From the Myanmar embassy in Dhaka, it was announced on Thursday, about six Rohingya refugees have voluntarily returned to Rakhine province," he said on Friday in Kolkata, the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. But where is his evidence? Will they be able to show foreign journalists? Or a UN representative? The Myanmar government should focus on the return of the Rohingya refugees to the country, "he said."
