The Supreme Court of India has given notice to the Jammu and Kashmir administration in response to his sister's request for release of former Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The notice should be replied within the next two weeks. The apex court will also investigate whether the arrest of Omar Abdullah under the Public Protection Act (PSA) is legitimate.
The Supreme Court on Friday rejected the urgent hearing plea made by lawyer and former law minister Kapil Sibal, adding that the next hearing of the case will be held on March 2.
After today's hearing, Omar Abdullah's sister Sara Abdullah Pilot said, "Hopefully, Omar Abdullah will be released soon. We have full confidence in the justice system. Hopefully, as in the rest of India, the people of Kashmir will have equal rights. I look forward to that day. ”
Earlier, his sister Sara Abdullah piloted the Supreme Court challenging the central decision to imprison Omar Abdullah in the Public Protection Act. He immediately appealed to the apex court to release the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
On August 5 last year, the Central Government withdrew Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, withdrawing the privileges of the special states there. And from then on, political leaders of Jammu and Kashmir, including Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, were detained. Recently, the public protection law was also imposed on them.
Then in a petition filed in the Supreme Court, Sara Abdullah Pilot alleged that the arrest of his brother in this way violated his constitutional right to freedom of expression. Such a move is in fact part of a sustained and concerted effort to suppress political rivals.
