Three people were killed in firing during protests in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh in protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. It is alleged that police opened fire during a protest-clash in Karnataka's Mangaluru town on Thursday. Two people were killed there. One was shot dead in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
There have been widespread protests in various cities in at least 10 states. Local media said five people were killed during the unequal protests following the passage of the Civil Amendment Bill.
Four policemen were shot dead in Mangaluru in a video that went viral on social media. A group of students were allegedly shot dead there. Hospital officials on Thursday reported the death of two people.
A local government official said that since this afternoon, the city has had a huge clash with angry mobs who have gone down in protest, ignoring the ban.
Meanwhile, protesters on Thursday reported the death of a man in Uttar Pradesh's capital, Lucknow, who died while undergoing treatment after being injured by police firing during the protests. However, the Uttar Pradesh administration has denied that the person was killed in police shootings.
On Wednesday night, the administration issued 144 clauses in Uttar Pradesh in fear of violence. More than four people were banned from the gathering. Similar steps were taken in various parts of Karnataka, including Bangalore.
Section 144 will be issued in Bangalore from 6am to midnight on Thursday, said Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao. But ignoring the administration's ban, the crowd called on the streets.
